Warm-up: Chapter 1 Reading Quiz
1. Where does the narrator live?
2. How old are Scout and Jem when the story starts?
3. Who is their new friend?
4. What is the name of the odd family in Maycomb?
5. Why does Jem touch the Radley house?
Activities: Art and Literature - Boo Radley: Students will be asked to draw a description of Boo Radley based on the description Jem gives in chapter one. (This is a great way to ease into the novel! Students will be using components of the plot to create a drawing. This kind of exercise helps them learn how to comprehend and interpret plot points and use their knowledge to produce something unique. Normally, they would be producing writing, but I think it's important to let students exercise all parts of their imaginations! There will be plenty of writing to come in the future.)
Read Chapter Two: We will begin reading chapter two in class. (We will strive to do a little reading in class everyday!)
HOMEWORK: Students need to finish chapter 2 for homework! There will be a reading quiz Wednesday, October 24!

Warm-up: Chapter 2 Reading Quiz
1. How does Scout feel about starting school?
2. What things does Scout get in trouble for at school?
3. Why won't Walter Cunningham, Jr. take Miss Caroline's quarter?
4. How does Walter Cunningham, Sr. pay Atticus for his legal work?
Activities: Writing - Pretend you are Scout. Write a journal entry describing your first day of school! (This week, we will work on the process of drafting and editing. Journals are a great way to start because it is a pretty informal style of writing, so their voices can really shine through! So far, students have only been asked to produce a paragraph at a time. This will be the longest piece they have written so far.)
Read Chapter Three: We will begin reading chapter 3 in class.
HOMEWORK: There is no homework tonight! If students have fallen behind, I definitely encourage them to catch up!

Warm-up: There is no warm-up today!
Activities: Writing - Today, students will edit their journal entries from the previous day. They will swap papers and edit a peer's paper as well as edit their own paper. By the end of the class, their paper will have been reviewed twice, once by a friend and once by themselves. (Today, we will be focusing on editing marks. The ability to edit a paper properly will be a skill they use their entire scholarly career. To the left is a picture of the editing marks we will be using!)
Finish Reading Chapter Three: We will continue reading chapter 3, picking up where we left off the previous class.
HOMEWORK: Students need to finish reading chapter 3 for homework. There will be a reading quiz Friday, October 26!

Burris Ewell
Warm-up: Chapter 3 Reading Quiz
1. What do Walter Cunningham and Atticus discuss at lunch?
2. How does Calpurnia tell Scout to behave during lunch?
3. What about Burris Ewell frightens Miss Caroline?
4. What does Scout ask Atticus to do about her schooling?
5. What compromise does Scout and Atticus reach about school?
Activities: Writing - Students will write a final and error free draft of their journal entries.
Character Body Map - Each class will choose their own character and spend the majority of the semester focusing on that character specifically. The result will be that the five main characters of the novel have been engaged, discovered, and learned about! We will do this by working on a character body map a little bit each week. A character body map discusses indirect characterization of a character. Basically, indirect characterization is what a character says, feels, does, and thinks. Here is a link that describes this activity more in depth:

Our characters will be drawn full sized on a large sheet of butcher paper!
HOMEWORK: There is no homework tonight. However, students are encouraged to either catch up or read ahead!
